Narrative summary

Women human rights defenders (WHRDs) face a catalog of abuse from governments and armed groups across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). WHRDs are still facing additional challenges and defamation connected to gender discrimination which are embedded in the social and legal infrastructure—leading to more significant violations and danger imposed on women activists, such as defamation campaigns, threats to family, and cultural slander. It is crucial that WHRDs from the region are given the ability and space to contribute to the discussion on how to build solidarity and overcome legal and inclusion challenges and to spin a positive narrative about their work at a time when feminist movements are being disparaged.
